Do I Hesitate?

"As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. 'Come, follow me,' Jesus said, 'and I will make you fishers of men." At once the left their nets and followed him. Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, preparing their nets. Jesus called them, and immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him." Matthew 4:18-22

This portion of scripture has me asking the question "Do I hesitate?" When God calls, do I immediately respond with a "Yes" or do I brush off His voice for a "Maybe" or "In a little while" or "Sure, God you've got it, but after I have wrapped up a few other areas of life first."

I read the scriptures and am awed by the response of Simon and Andrew and James and John. God called them to something new in the middle of their workday. Jesus interrupted their good work for better work. And they didn't hesitate! They dropped their nets and followed. Immediately. No conditions. No "Yes, God I'm all yours, but let me finish this catch real quick." Scripture says they left their nets at once. They didn't hesitate.

They trusted Jesus with their next steps without knowing their next steps.

Oh how this convicts my heart.

So I'm asking myself the simple yet somewhat complex question . . . do I trust without reservation? Do I follow even when there is no detailed roadmap for my journey? Do I eagerly say yes, whether the stakes are low or high or somewhere in between? Do I follow at once or do I ask for more time? Do I finish my cast or do I joyfully throw down my net, right then and there? Do I hesitate?

  1. Our youth pastor did a sermon on this very topic a couple of weeks ago! So now I'm suspicious that God might really be trying to tell me something ;)

  2. I've realized recently I have a tendency to say "Are you sure?" "You mean me, not him/her/them?" or the "yeah, yeah" syndrome. Growing up I did this, as did many/all of my friends, mom would call out something that she was asking to be done and it was "yeah, yeah" as in "I'll get to it when I have time." I can feel myself doing that with our Lord too, sad. It is hard for me to walk away from my list, to do His much better work.

  3. This will shock you, but I just had the exact same thought as Amanda above given the recent sermon at our church :)
